Allure – Best Of Beauty

As you may know, my favorite magazine is Allure, and the October issue is good because it features the Best Of Beauty, which is a huge list of the 200+ favorite products of Allure employees. 2,000 products were tested, and they narrowed it down to their favorites. Given the fact that there are way more than 2,000 products out there, only a fraction of all beauty products were tested, but I still think the list is a good place to start if you are looking for something new.

I don’t necessarily agree with all their choices (for example, their favorite sunscreen is Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 55, and this is the sunscreen I lathered on twice an hour when I was sitting in the shade, with a hat on, once at the Hard Rock Pool here in Vegas, and I got totally freckled and burned after two hours!) That’s why I always go with Zinc Oxide-based sunblocks now. I haven’t gotten burned once since I switched!

After seeing an interesting product on the Allure list, I then go to Makeupalley.com to read reviews of the product. Then if it’s a skin care item, I cross-reference the product ingredients with my list of cosmetic acne ingredients (I would skip this step if I wasn’t prone to acne). The October issue also has some other interesting articles – breakthroughs in beauty products, a scary story about women totally obsessed with Botox, Restylane, and other cosmetic Dermatology treatments, and info about Green beauty products. There’s also an article called Hall of Fame, which features beauty products that have consistently won in their category over the years. Of course good ole Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is on the list (it’s good, but not that great), and why Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara wins all the time makes no sense to me, since it’s just an average mascara.

I’m a magazine junkie! I read so many magazines a month, and even though I try to cut back, I end up subscribing to even more. Which magazines do you read? Here are the ones I currently get in the mail each month:

Beauty Magazines
Allure
This is currently my favorite because it always has lots of info about the newest beauty products that are coming out. It also usually has articles about skin care or anti-aging, which are my favorite topics. I don’t get why they think it’s great that Britney Spears is on the cover, but they would never, ever stoop to the level of having Paris Hilton on the cover. I don’t get the difference.

These are my fashion/beauty magazines. I studied fashion photography in college, so I still rip out tearsheets and save them. Most of these magazines also have articles about breakthroughs in skin care, and a lot of times they will report on up and coming skin treatments I haven’t even heard about yet! I’m not sure if I’m going to continue my Glamour because it takes a long time to read, and I already get too many magazines! American Spa isn’t too exciting to me, but it contains the supplement Medical Spa Report, which features breakthroughs in the world of Medical Spas. If you work in the Medical Spa field, I recommend signing up for the free online version of Medical Spa Report.

Nutrition Action
I love reading about working out and eating well, even though I find it easier to read about than to actually do! Nutrition Action is good because it is sort of a Consumer Reports for health. It tells you what is actually healthy and good for you, based on research and facts, and the magazine lobbies to force the food industry to get rid of trans fats, have more accurate labels on food, etc.

Aside from my love of beauty, skin care and fashion, I also have an interest in personal finance, and I strive to be an entrepreneur. I like Consumer Reports because it’s helped me to buy a fabulous vacuum and laundry detergent, but it also occasionally reports on skin care. One of my moisturizers happened to recently get a Best Buy by Consumer Reports, because it was one of the few moisturizers to actually show a reduction in fine lines, and it’s not overly expensive: Olay Regenerist Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream.

When I go to the store, I inevitably flip through (or buy) even more magazines – Star, 944, Vegas, Conde Nast Traveler. So many magazines, so little time! Woops, I just signed up to receive Skin Inc since it’s free! Yay, a skin care magazine!

New Beauty Magazine

I subscribe to probably 15 magazines, but just picked up New Beauty magazine for the first time. Well I’ve browsed it before, but this is the first time I actually bought it! It’s a really big magazine, and it comes out only 4 times a year. It has a really good overview of all sorts of different treatments like Botox, Restylane, Juvederm and other dermal fillers, hair problems, anti-aging tips, information about peptides and sunscreen, beauty dangers, and tips to improve your body, and even your teeth! It’s a great magazine if you aren’t familiar with a lot of different Medical Spa treatments, and it even touches on Plastic Surgery. It’s also great for people that already have a lot of skin care knowledge, but want to learn about the newest skin care products procedures that are now available, or that will soon become FDA approved. It’s an expensive magazine – even the subscription is a bit pricey, but it’s worth it to me!

The magazine does have a long list of Doctors that perform various Dermatology or Plastic Surgeon procedures, which is helpful if you’re looking for a doctor. But the section is pretty long, so it takes up a good portion of the magazine. You can also check out the New Beauty website, where you can search for doctors there as well.
