Oh and just to clarify I don't work "with" candela gentlelase as the company, more like I work in a clinic which uses that technology. Just reread the post and thought I should point that out as it was worded wrong. Cause to be honest I wouldn't necessarily belive someone who works for the laser company as it would probably be PR.

Hi I think your website is great - very honest and to the point.

Regarding laser, I'm a laser technician. I work with candela gentlelase and have to say it really does work. As you mention it's permenant reduction not permanent removal. We are always honest with our clients and tell them they will continue to come in maybe once or twice a year to get some patchwork done.

Now there are 2 problems I believe with why it doesn't work with sone people. Firstly people are using IPL which is literally just light and calling it laser. It is not in anyway a laser it does not emit a laser beam and should not be in the same category. As IPL does not work at retarding the growth as much as a laser, it seems to just slow the growth down so that in a years time All the hair comes back a little thinner everywhere. The alexandrite laser is a near infrared light which retards the growth follicle. With any laser the hair can only be effectively treated in the growth phase so 6 week intervals are important for atleast 4 - 6 treatments if you try this out I assure you there will be a big difference.

There is no doubt the hair will return, that's actually a good thing ( otherwise you would have that extremely numb feeling all the time like after a wax as the hair is vital in helping your feeling senses). But the difference is it returns as a small white coloured hair which can hardly be seen and is inactive ie. not growing. Similar to the ones on our cheeksor forehead.

The second issue then is shaving. Most clinics tell you to shave between treatments. Now imagine what would happen to these inactive hair like the one on your cheeks if you shaved over them. They would become active and start to grow again. This is why you need to keep to the 6 weeks cause you will be able to get the hairs before they need a shave. Once you have had your treatment you should not shave at all. If you complete a full course and then shave over your leg because of a few patches, you will undo everything. You will reactivate all the growth again. Now there is no doubt there will be some patches, leave them alone and get them lasered it shouldn't cost alot to get a 5-10 min treatment every 6 months. It's completely worth not having to do anything to legs, underarms, bikini for half a year.

There's so much more info like what places aren't so effective and why but if you find a place that's honest and upfront with you then you can make an informed decision.

By the way it probably won't work that well on you until you are off the pill as you are on a constant level of high hormones mimicking pregnancy (Yasmin) and this will effect your result as hair has ALOT to do with hormones. Will still be worth it but just know you will need more and know what to expect so that you are not disappointed.

If you did not sign a waver for excusing possible scaring;sue..
They have liability insurance that should cover it. But before had speak nicely to the establishment & write them a very nice notarized letter explaining your situation and ask for compensation. So you may sing praises to your friends at how wonderfully they took care of their mistake or you will have to take further action..lawsuit.,reporting them to the BBB, Board of Health and ruin the technicians life for a little bit. Get Fired not being able to work in her field in the area....WoW Thats a lot of work and Time.................Or You Could Tell the Owner/establishment in hopes of preventing it from accruing to someone else...Be a Good Samaritan & use a mixture of arnica, aloe, clary sage, calangila and shea butter.(Check out your local health food store) Rub and massage it into your scared areas Daily until they vanish...Make a personal descion to be peacefully joining with your words and action at work ,with friends, people of your global community, even in the home...Some times especially woman can have Hot words like Lasers that can cut & scar people for life..Just taken a look at it from the flip side...May you travel in the most blessed of circles and follow your divine model :D Hinagata

What should I do about a technician purposely dabbing the machine into the shin of my leg six times in frustration over me telling her to go back over an area I believed she had missed? Dabbing is normally done on fatty areas only like under the arms, but never on boney areas like the shin. Not to mention hairs still coming back after 12 treatments so far, in some spots which are growing so short I cut myself having to shave them. I've got ugly burn marks that are sure to leave a scar, which I've taken pictures of. Who would I consult about this and do I stand a chance in court to get out of paying the remaining balance for these unsatisfactory treatments? She messed up my leg!

Noeleen,
I don't think having the piercing would pose a problem with the treatments, as long as you take it out. I'm not exactly sure, though.

I want to get laser hair removal on my top lip as I am light skined but suffer from dark hairs on my top lip, im very conscious and getting the top of my lip pierced was not the wisest of choices as it now draws much more attention to it. Can i still get the treatment with the piercing? i can take it out whilst its is being done (obviously) will the hole get irritated?

Hi Jeni - I just looked at the web site for the center that I first got treatments from. They use a Candela Alexandrite GentleLase. I do not know what type of laser was used at the second place, and it's hard to know what made the difference - the laser or the technique of the technicians, or maybe both. The procedures at the two places were different. The treatment that actually worked was more painful (an anesthetic cream was prescribed beforehand) and the technician held the wand of the laser over (but not directly on) the skin area for a certain amount of time. At the second place I went for treatment, I usually felt no pain (sometimes it felt like nothing at all), and the technician moved the wand of the laser much more quickly, and directly on the skin. At the second place, I had 7 treatments with poor results - frustrating to say the least. :( I hope that this information helps, and thanks for the research you're doing!

Hi Kerry,
Thanks for your story about laser hair removal. Do you know what brand of laser the first salon used that you went to? I wish there was an easy way to find out what spas offer good results, and have good trained technicians, versus unscrupulous places. Even checking with the Better Business Bureau isn't usually that accurate. I've just been researching everything online, calling spas and asking them about their equipment, and then asking people in person about their treatments if they've had laser hair removal.

I have had laser hair removal at 2 different places. I am a light-skinned girl with very dark hair and really tortured by dark hair where I don't want it! I had a small area done - bikini area- at a medical cener-run laser and plastic surgery center in Boston by a very experienced electrologist/laser technician. I had 4 treatments ($1500 total) 2 years ago, and have had no more than several hairs grow back. It's absolutely amazing to me, and the freedom from bumps and ingrown hairs means that I no longer dread putting on a bathing suit. However, I could not afford to go to the center for larger areas, so I tried a package at a laser operation that opens up after hours at local salons in Boston and in other metro areas. The lasers were definitely different, and the technicians had no previous exerience with lasers or hair removal. But I had a previous good experience with laser, and so I purchased a package knowing that I was a good candidate, and that laser had worked for me in the past. I was wrong to trust that these treatments would work too, and I was sold a package of almost useless treatments. Based on this experience, I really do believe that there are different types of treatments. The treatments at the second place that I went to simply were inadequate, and I received terrible treatment from customer service when I called to talk to them about the lack of effectiveness and what could be done about it. I think that the second business I went to is unscrupulous, but if I had the money, I would go back to the first place again to have my legs treated. I just wish that women (and men) could be steered to the scrupulous centers and spas, and to those that offer treatment with appropriate and effective equipment. Thanks a lot for your blog.
Yay, hope you like your new job! I always have a tough time working for other people, which is why I always find myself trying to be self-employed. But then I never have money, so it's a vicious circle! Hopefully your new job will be less stressful!
