Do you have any favorite beauty products from your teens or pre-teens? Current teenagers are so spoiled because they have Sephora and MAC stores, and then of course the internet with an endless supply of fabulous beauty products! Actually, it’s a good thing I’m not a teenager now, because I wouldn’t have nearly enough money to afford everything that I’d covet, since I would want everything!
Back in my day, (the 80s) there weren’t nearly as many options for beauty products, and I only purchased stuff from the drugstore. I don’t think I purchased a single department store product until my mid-20s!
My favorite 80s products (that I can remember) include: Sea Breeze toner, Buf Pufs, Noxema, Zinka hot pink chapstick, Sun-In, Bonne Bell lip smackers, Clearasil cleanser, everything by Wet ‘N Wild (especially blue mascara, blue eyeliner, and blue nail polish), and Secret Shower Fresh deodorant (which I’m still mourning over to this day).
Depending on your age, what are you favorite beauty products from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s?

From the 70’s-early 80’s: Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific Shampoo, Sea Breeze esp. Breezettes, Sea-n-Ski lip balm in mint, Farrah Fawcett Shampoo, A Coty perfume named Mizuki,
Thats all I can think of now.

70’s – (when I was a kid) Lemon Up Shampoo. 80’s – Tenax hair gel in a green and silver tube. Best hair gel ever. Stiff Stuff Hairspray for big NJ hair.

My favorite product – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Chapstick.

I was a teen in the 80s and I basically had really expensive taste. My first makeup line was Yves Saint Laurent and I exclusively wore that line for many years. In the 90s I started wearing MAC and then discovered Bobby Brown in 2001.

Bain de Soleil tanning oil from the 70s before they changed the scent. Blue Jeans perfume. I can’t remember the name, but the runny lip gloss that came in glass bottles and rolled on and had really interesting flavors – I liked cola best. Chanel’s Cristalle perfume – my first adult perfume and still the best! – before they changed the formula.

I loved makeup when I was teenager, much more than I do now. I loved Clinique’s Glossy mascara, Origins mint face wash, and Quick stick by L’oreal . Bonne Bell, St. Ives, anything I could get my hands on

The 60’s introduced me to pink sponge rollers, banana curls, detanglers, and Dippity Do.
Bonne Bell Lip Smackers in Chocolate Mint and Birthday Cake were my favorites in the 70’s. Love’s Musky Jasmine Flower, a Coty (?) blush stick – go lightly or you look like a clown, and pale green eyshadow also made the list.
Chanel’s Christale perfume in the 80’s, eyelash curlers with heavy mascara and navy or purple eye liner lining the innner lids (potentially harmful), patchouli and white musk oil lightly dabbed on the wrists and behind the ears, tanning gel for the face, Noxema, Johnson’s Baby Oil for tanning in the spring and Bain de Soleil oil for the summer, Sea Breeze, Ten-O-Six, and Cherry Chapstick.

I was just thinking about this last night. Here are the ones I remember (may be different as I’m from the UK and I know some of these are still available in the US.) Tenax hair gel, shampoo and consitioner. You could only buy it in salons and it disappeared in the early ’80’s. Neutrogena liquid face wash. So much more convenient than the Neutrogena bars. Noxzema (although that was only available very briefly over here) A perfume called Eau Jeaune L’Orientale by L’Oreal. Aqua Manda bubble bath. The original Vidal Sassoon shampoo and conditioner which smelt of almonds. 10-0-6 cleanser which could have probably stripped paint off wood it was so strong. Bonne Belle lip gloss, very gloopy and in a variety of nasty flavours (mine was mint.) Delph lemon cleanser and toner (which bleached my freckles.) Happy days…probably why I’m still such a beauty junkie now.

I loved the Gold Pantene Mousse! Mousse in general was the it thing! I loved blue Chanel mascara cake. I loved Dionne Von Furstenberg’s make up line which has totally disappeared………..I loved Calvin Klein’s perfume with just his name. Chanel poudre powder, loulou perfume, roll on lipgloss in spearmint (forgot name) the original Pantene shampoo line with its gold caps, sigh good memories

How do I find Tenax to purchase? What store or online place? It was the best. I have thick curly hair and tenax would style my hair the way I wanted. My h air otherwise goes the way it wants. Thanks

Tenax hasn’t been made in many years. A couple years ago, several unopened tubes came up for sale on ebay and they went for a couple hundred dollars. I miss it, too. It was brilliant stuff. I have one partially used tube left that I’m saving for special occasions, but it’s dehydrated a bit and has turned jelly-like.

Yes, I too, was thinking recently about how spoiled teens are today when it comes to beauty products. I grew up in the ’70’s and those of us who grew up then were so thrilled just with a trip to the local drugstore or 5 &10 to collect some goodies. I never would have thought of making a pricey purchase from a dept. store counter, with the exception of one time when I purchased some of the first peel off mask that was ever made – Max Factor in a wonderful Strawberry scent – which my mom bought me as a special treat. It came in a clear jar and applied w/ a brush. I still have it today, kept it for memory’s sake. My faves from the ’70’s were – Love’s Baby Soft Original, Lemon, and Rain scents(have never smelled anything else like that rain scent, very unique). Lots of great shampoos – Herbal Essence, Lemon-Up, Earth Born and Sunshine Harvest for wonderful fragrances, Coty “Sweet Earth” perfumes, lots of fun stuff from Avon, Sea Breeze wipes, Bonne Bell Lipsmackers, Tickle antipirspirant, Skinny Dip cologne, Jean Nate, Maybelline roll-on lipgloss in lots of fun flavors. I remember buying Max Factor cosmetics a lot back when Jaclyn Smith was doing ads for them. Are they still in existence? Haven’t seen their stuff in a long time. It’s amazing how old cosmetics and scents can trigger memories. I have a makeup case where I store old stuff too old to use that I’ve kept for the sake of nostalgia. Looking at it brings back such wonderful memories. I have stuff from my teen years and I’m 45 now!

Neutrogena had some cool and kind of strange products in the 80s and 90s. They had an amber colored oil control gel that came in a small tube, anyone remember that? The clay acne mask was the best, very pricey though. The also had an alcohol free antiseptic cleanser with a blue cap. They were not as mainsteam back then and their products were kind of quirky. You paid to be unique though, they were the priciest brand at the drugstore.

i think every girl loved lip smackers growing up! my favorite lip glosses were maybelline kissing koolers. (from the 80s) they were bullet shaped and swirled and came in flavors like strawberry fizz, cherry cola, tutti frutti and banana split. i loved them! i got 6 of them not too long ago and its awesome having them again(even though i dont use them-maybe one day i will) because i loved them SO much back in the day! another thing that i loved was the debbie gibson perfume electric youth. my aunt got me this perfume and i LOVED it and was all kinds of cool for having it! it had a pink neon cord looking thing in it-kinda hard to explain but it was really cool! those were my 2 faves-kissing koolers and electric youth. totally takes me back!

Go to Vermont Country Store online. They carry many of the old cosmetics, shampoos and perfumes.

Please bring back:
Coty Blush Sticks (Revlon made a limited edition one about 15 years ago?)were only $4 or $5 dollars in the early 70’s – big money to me in those days at drugstores everywhere – please bring these back they were wonderful!
The Original Drugstore forumlation of Evening in Paris Perfume – It was so popular because it was so delicious and sensual and light.
Bien Aimee Perfume from Chypre Imperial
Bonne Bell Medicated Makeup ($1.25 per tube in 1969) in light tone
Always used and still do: Maybelline eye-shadows and mascaras – never go out of style…
Same with Neutrogena Soaps… mild and wonderfully cleasing lather!!!
Estee Lauder rose-gold (or was it frosted rose?) lipstick at $9 a tube one of my most expensive luxury makeup purchases – at Jordan Marsh… I think they were $6 in the 70’s
The Vermont Country Store version of Evening in Paris is re-forulated a few years ago and is definitely NOT the same as the wonderful original, but still okay. I prefer Chanel No 5 to the new one.
And of Course Dippity Doo!!! – L.A. Looks now makes a nice hair setting gel that I use in it’s place
Raspberry scented original Herbal Essences shampoo in the 70’s was GREAT, too, make that again!.

I forgot my Village Bath products – loved their Oak Moss oil for perfume, too. And the ever ubiquitus Musk Oil! And Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint liquid soap… still use that today, as well…

In the 90s Biore had a warming scrub that came in individual bullet shaped packets to use once a week. It was awesome! They don’t make it anymore :( I was also into the old school Neutrogena products when they were really simple and straightforward, and in minimalist packaging. Now they are gaudy and overhyped like everything else at the drugstore.

Does anyone remember those tiny plastic containers with white tops that had really thin pink nail polish and watery yellow cologne that came as a set? I think Bonne Bell made them. Every little girl in the 80s had them! I would love to see a photo of them! I can’t find a picture of an intact set anywhere!

Hello,
I am working on a novel that is set in 1989! So I was glad to see this post. I was 17 in 89, but can’t recall what kind of chapstick was popular amongst the girls and/or perfume. It would really help to know.
Thanks, CB

If memory serves me right Obsession(purple bottle),Poison,Eternity and Liz Claibourne were the most desired department store brands. And then therre were the cheaper ones you could get at drugstores like Incognito and Explanation that came in a black and white bottle shaped just like an explanation point.Oh and how could I forget about Virgo and 227.
