Product Discontinuation Paranoia

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection CreamPeople often say I’m neurotic. I have no idea why. I used to constantly try out new products, always trying to find something better, since I was never satisfied with anything. But there are a few products I now love, like the blue ChapStick, and that makes me constantly paranoid that the product will be discontinued. It seems like companies have new face creams out every few months, always replacing the old ones with new ones. I’ve been lucky with the blue ChapStick, since it’s been around for years, and I’ve been extremely lucky with Secret Shower Fresh Invisible Solid, until now! I’ve been using it since I was 16, and while I’ve tried probably 20 other deodorants, I always go back to the Shower Fresh. But last week I bought some more, and the packaging had changed, and so had its scent! For the last 16 years I’ve been worried Shower Fresh would go away, and now it has:( In the photo above, I found 5 of the “real” Shower Freshes on clearance. When they run out, I guess I will just have to move on, after writing to Secret, telling them my sob story.

What products can you not live without? I will be beside myself if these other products get discontinued as well: Shiseido Ultimate Protection Cream SPF 55. The best sunscreen ever!!!!!! I am always testing sunscreens, and will make a post about them, but this is what I use every day. I’ve also been using Maybelline Pure Makeup Nude for about a year, and it’s the best foundation I’ve ever used, and it’s only like $5 per tube. Since it’s only been out for a year, I have a horrible feeling it will go away someday soon:(Maybelline Pure Makeup And since I live in Vegas and have horribly dry skin, my skin could not be more happy when I discovered Clinique Moisture On-line. I’ve probably tried 50 moisturizers in the past few years, and nothing comes close to this one! I layer it over an antioxidant serum, and then apply the Shiseido sunscreen, mixed with the Maybelline Pure Makeup. I was alarmed when I was at a Clinique counter last week and didn’t see Moisture On-line. I asked the salesman if it was discontinued (no, I’m not paranoid) and he tssked and said no, and had the audacity to try to get me to buy something newer. Every time I go to Clinique, the salespeople look at me with disdain when I ask for this product. Either they get bonuses for selling the newer products, or I must be the only person that loves it.Clinique Moisture On-line

Another product that has made a huge difference for my skin is Philosophy Purity Made Simple cleanser. This cleanser works so well on my skin because it doesn’t dry it out like most cleansers, and it doesn’t clog my acne-prone pores. It doesn’t smell that great, but it works great! And finally, there is one more product that’s made a HUGE difference in my skin. It’s made Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels totally unnecessary for me. Also by Philosophy is the greatest skin treatment ever: Philosophy The Microdelivery Peel. It works so well to gently scrub and exfoliate my skin, leaving it super smooth, soft, and clear. This and the Philosophy cleanser have helped so much in curing my acne, and they’ve helped to make my skin look much better as a whole.

PhilosophyThere are a few other products I really like, but these are the only ones I can’t live without! If every product in the world were to vanish, I wouldn’t care, as long as these were still around! I’m know I’m paranoid, but I quite often get worried just thinking these products could be discontinued one day:(

Update: The Clinique Moisture On-line has been discontinued. You can read more about my sadness in a post about skin care packaging.

Have you ever used bare minerals foundation? I’ve been using it for a couple years now and I’ve never really questioned whether or not it could be attributing to my acne? I don’t think it has a list of what is in it, besides the obvious, minerals…

  2. Jeni - Savvy Skin Says:

I haven’t used Bare Minerals because it seemed too messy to apply. Where I worked, we sold Jane Iredale mineral makeup, but it made my skin really dry. I just looked up Bare Minerals online and it contains Mica, Iron Oxide, Bismuth Oxychloride and I think Titanium Dioxide. If you do a google search for “Bismuth Oxychloride” you will find a lot of people say the ingredient aggravates their acne or sensitive skin. This is the ingredient that causes the “sheen.” I honestly don’t know if this ingredient is aggravating, but there are a lot of people that think it does. http://www.ezilon.com/information/article_3922.shtml . Personally, I would stop using it for now, just to see if that could help with the problem. I’ll do more research on it to see if I can come up with anything conclusive.

I have had good luck with Neutrogena Healthy Skin pressed powder – I apply it with a powder brush, and I use it over my Shiseido sunscreen, mixed with a dab of the Maybelline Pure Makeup.

  3. Julie Says:

I appreciate your getting back to me so quickly! My skin is an awful mess right now! I was crying washing my face last night :( I will stop using the bare minerals and try your make up ideas and see what happens. Thanks!

  4. Kim Says:

I was reading an article by your skin lady Jen, about Bare MIneral types of makeup because that is what I use- Here is the link:

http://www.cosmeticscop.com/bulletin/MineralMakeup2007.doc Hope that is ok to post Jen, I figured since you use her books and such it would be ok!

Some of my fave’s are: Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm-Under lipstick or gloss. I love the tingling!

Abother item from Burt’s Bees is the lemon butter cuticle cream- I use the balm and cuticle cream every night and I do have really nice cuticles and really soft lips:)

  5. Jeni - Savvy Skin Says:

Oh thanks for that link about mineral makeup. I was going to write a post soon mentioning that mineral makeup can possibly cause acne, or irritate your skin, if it contains Bismuth Oxychloride! I know a lot of people are going to be shocked. I haven’t used much mineral makeup, since it usually dries out my skin and makes it look cakey, and I am too messy to use loose powder. At my spa we sold Jane Iredale, and I used their pressed foundation, but it looked like crap on my skin.

I like that Burt’s Bees cuticle cream! I haven’t tried the lip balm. I also use their Marshmallow Creme as an eye cream (it causes my pores to get clogged if I use it all over).

  6. Kathy Says:

There are a lot of great MMU companies out there with more hydrating formulas. I hope it’s okay to post this! I’ve been using Lumiere Cosmetics Flawless Face formula for dry skin and it’s the best I’ve found for my adult hormonal acne/dry retin-a skin! A lot of people seem to have trouble with bismuth and there are a lot of companies that dont’ contain it. Many give samples for cheap as well if you’d like to continue with MMU.

What would I hate to lose? My Lumiere foundation, Dr. Denese Firming Facial Pads, Carmex balm, and L’Occitane Shea Butter Handcream!

  7. talia Says:

Wow, I didn’t know that this type of makeup could cause acne! I have not tried Bare Minerals but I am a big fan of Pur Minerals. I love their products, thank goodness it never triggered acne on me!

  8. talia Says:

Oh and after I posted a second ago I saw that Kathy mentioned Carmex lip balm, this stuff is amazing! It is nice and thick and perfect for cold, blistery days and they say it cures cold sores too!

  9. Kym Says:

Wow, i have been using Bare minerals “rare Minerals” Night for a while now, and i have been loving it. Just recentely though i bought covergirl mineral powder, and i had a really odd severe breakout on my chin, and cheeks. I hav ebben going crazy, trying to figure out what could have caused it, nad i didnt even consider the covergirl, b/c i believed mineral makeup to be better actaully for sensitive skin. Thank you for your post.;) What do you think?

  10. Jeni - Savvy Skin Says:

    Kym,
If you just started getting the breakouts, I would stop using the covergirl and see if that is the culprit. If you didn’t have any problems when you were just using the Rare Minerals, then it sounds like that is not the problem. Otherwise, is there anything else new you’ve been using on your skin, or have you had a change in hormones at all?

  11. lovy Says:

Jeni, i started to use mineral powder called “Splash’ and also called “Mermaid Mineral Powder” . SPF 15, but i dont know the complete ingredients, try to search it but havent found it, could you help me or do you know whether is is potentially pore clogging or not? Cause this brand is new in my country, only one place selling them. Maybe you have that brand in Vegas? And would you share what antioxidant you use before your shiseido sun?

  12. lovy Says:

o yes, jeni, by the way , have you ever tried clinique total turnaround concentrate (it is like a serum) for all skin types, do you think generally it is safe for acne prone skin like yours or mine or is it contains pore clogging ingredients?

  13. Jeni - Savvy Skin Says:

    Lovy,
I haven’t used Clinique Total Turnaround Concentrate, but I looked up its ingredients. Offhand, it doesn’t appear to have any pore-clogging ingredients. It does have rice bran extract, wheat germ extract, and corn starch. Sometimes food-based ingredients aren’t the best for acne. Its main ingredient is Salicylic Acid, which you can find in a lot of cheaper products. Paula’s Choice makes some cheaper versions, and they definitely won’t clog pores.

  14. lovy Says:

Jeni, what do you think of my comment (at number eleven), what antioxidant you use before sunblock and what about splash mineral powder is it good generally speaking? btw, in my country there is no Paula’s Choice, only Clinique, Shiseido, Estee Lauder, Lancome, etc

  15. lovy Says:

Dear Jeni, generally speaking, what is your opinion on Estee Lauder Idealist? I’m looking for product that can minimize pores without clogging it or causing acne, i cannot search for its ingredients neither at makeupalley or estee web. Do you know its ingredients, are they pore clogging and can cause acne? And Jeni, dont forget to comment also on Splash Mineral Powder and my comment number 14, thx :)

  16. Jeni - Savvy Skin Says:

    Lovy,
I looked up Splash mineral powder, but couldn’t find its ingredients anywhere. Usually mineral makeup doesn’t contain pore-clogging ingredients, so it’s generally good for acne-prone skin. Some people have reactions to Bismuth Oxychloride, which is in a lot of mineral makeups, but if you are having good luck with the Splash, I would continue to use it.

I have not tried Estee Lauder Idealist, and couldn’t find its ingredients either. It seems to get good reviews, and most people seem to like it. If you haven’t bought it yet, when you go to the store, you can looks at its box and look at the ingredients before you buy it. Or you could always buy it and compare it to my “cosmetic acne” list, and return it if it doesn’t work (assuming they let you do returns).

Also, I don’t know if they ship to your country, but you can only buy Paula’s Choice online – http://www.cosmeticscop.com

  17. lovy Says:

Jeni, thank you very much. I suppose you use the antioxidants serum from Paula? I ‘ll try to get them on line, thanks again

  18. amanda Says:

can you please let me know anything you may know about clinique products. i just bought clinique acne solutions and loked u the ingredients and alot of them were the same as the ones the cause breakouts. i have oily skin and started breaking out due to PX prescriptive products from macys.so they recommended clinique but cause of the ingredients im afraid to try it, not to mention it was very pricey.what do you recommend should i try phlosophy products? or give clinique a try at this point i dont know!! my face looks very bad and its beenlike this for 2 weeks ever since px.pls help! any advice

  19. Jeni - Savvy Skin Says:

    Amanda,
The two Clinique products I use that do not have pore-clogging ingredients are Moisture On-line and Dramatically Different Lotion. They are just moisturizers, though, and not for acne. Did you see my post about cosmetic acne – http://www.savvyskin.com/how-to-prevent-cosmetic-acne . If products make you breakout, make sure the product doesn’t contain any ingredients that are on this list. Also, this is my specific acne guide post: http://www.savvyskin.com/guide-to-cure-acne

  20. Kesh Says:

Hi, I live in a himd place (Okinawa, Japan) and I have combination skin that tend to break out sometimes… more so in the hot and humid weather if I don’t look after it. I have to wear a light moisturizer. I keep hearing about cleasing with oil is better for the skin and since you mentined you use Purity, I want to know if this is suitable for skin that gets oil in this humid weather. I cannot find a website that advises about cleansing oil and humidity, if this would be a potential ground ground for acne to bread! I have used Decleor cleaning gel (oil based for combo skin) before and that just blocked my pores, the toner was too drying surprisingly. I have high hopes to try oil again. I believe it is the combination of oils in the cleanser that determines whether it would suit my skin or not, so I want to give it a shot. PLease help!

  21. Kesh Says:

I’m sorry, there are so many typos in my last e-mail. It was very late in Japan (we are 14 hours ahead of USA). I ordered the Philosophy Exfoliating wash (mini peel), it says to use it once a day. I am 29 years old and I have a few old acne scars on my cheeks that I am trying to get rid of. SO, I have ordered this and MD Forte Skin Rejunivating lotion I. However, I am still on the quest of finding a good facewash as you can only use the Exfoliating wash once a day. My question is that is ‘Purity’ suitable for combination skin in humid weather? it doesn’t say anywhere and this product has many mixed reviews. Some say to only use on dry skin. I don’t want to spend a fortune and the price for this product is really good and I don’t have to use a toner and I love that idea. Also, do you know of a good moisturizer for combo skin that is light and has SPF for skin my age…. slowly creeping into the 30’s!

  22. Kathy Says Says:

I too love Moisture on Line by Clinique. I’ve used it for years and in the past couple of years everytime I go to buy it the sales person tells me that they are going to discontinue it. I pray that they do not! It is the best moisturizer I have ever tried and it doesn’t irritate my skin like all the others. I had eczema when I was younger and most creams burn my skin but the Moisture on Line has actually helped my skin heal. I love it.

  23. Yep Says:

    Hi there,
I also want to try out the Shiseido Cream, but I cannot find the ingredients list anywhere.. Are you sure that this product does not contain any parabens, zinc, talc, aluminium and bismuth too? I’ve been using Bare Minerals too and since I got aware of the shockingly harmful stuff that’s inside I’ve gotten very aware of my products. I also use the Shiseido Sun Protection Stick Foundation – SPF 30 – Very Water Resistant for ages now and was wondering if that is save to use too. Do you happen to know by any change?

  24. Sam Says:

I’ve been told I have combo skin. My T-Zone gets really shiny and halfway through the day, my make-up looks like it’s sat on top of my face (as opposed to being blended in). I’m always looking for the ‘1’ product that will work miracles without drying my skin out, has anyone tried Korres or Aesop products? can you let me know what you thought

  25. Shawna Evans Says:

The Clinique Moisture On-line is being discontinued!!! I cannot find it anywhere except for the price of 65.00 and I only found one!! Ugh!!!! Anyone know of a good alternative that won’t clog pores? I am on accutane so i can handle something that is heavily moisturizing like this. also, when I go off the accutane and dont need something as moisturizing and for the hot summer months, what do you recommend for a moisturizer?? thank you!!

  26. Giulietta Says:

Hi, I too used and loved Clinique Moisture Online and am very saddened it has been discontinued. Have you been able to find a moisturizer that is compatible????

  27. Tania Says:

Please somebody do something about MOISTURE ONLINE!!! WHY in the world did they discontinue it?? It was the best moisturizer ever for people with eczema (mine is not extreme) but still, a little and it gets worse since I live in the desert. I don’t want to try any more moisturizers, nothing worked as well. Seriously tried at least 50 or more and none like Moisture Online by Clinique. Not even the other alternatives Clinique offers. Help~

  28. Jeni - Savvy Skin Says:

    Tania,
I am still mourning the loss of Moisture On-line as well. I contacted Clinique but they aren’t making anything else with the same ingredients. I wrote this recently about the Moisture On-line: http://www.savvyskin.com/skin-care-packaging

  29. Julia Says:

I love your blog!!! Linked to it from my little blog, hope you don’t mind.

I also apply my sunscreen (Sekkisei) mixed with my foundation!
I really liked Pure Make-up back then, but we only get 4 colours in Germany, and the lightest one was too dark for me. Plus, it got discontinued here.
